street art

Yesterday, we watched 'Exit Through the Gift Shop'.  I was initially not very attracted to the idea of watching a documentary about graffiti...but this was actually an awesome documentary.  I highly recommend it.  It also brings up questions about what is art and who is considered an artist.  It is also pretty funny.  And on top of that, now I know of some awesome current artists: Banksy and Ron English.

Awesome artist Banksy that makes political comments with his art. Love it.  This is one of the ones he has up for free downloads of his website.  He has others that are much more awesome.  Even though, I still love this one.

I know, I know.  How can graffiti be interesting?  They are not talking about the ugly writing type of graffiti.  They are actually talking about street art.  Yes, it is done in public spaces and it's illegal.  But it's the kind of graffiti that adds to a place, not makes it ugly.  I don't know how to explain it, but I know that I have a mental filter for any graffiti because I dislike the ugly writing type.  I am turning that filter off though, because I am obviously missing on some awesome street art and creativity.  I kind of wish I had turned this filter off earlier, I think of the missed opportunities of street art in various places that I may never see again.  Oh well.  It's better late than never.

  1. I was thoroughly impressed by the street artists!! Rebel art, I like it. Not only do they have to be artists, and good ones, they have to hide to do their art. Added degree of thrill and awesomeness!

  2. And that is not graffiti, imo. Graffiti is the ugly writing, and that to me, is not art.

  3. There is a big difference between vandalizing and expressing :P
Here in Juarez is a wall that was dedicated to street art, it is over the wall that is in the Zaragoza Boulevard near the school Sergio and I went (CBTIS 128). And there might be more places like this one.
