I spent an hour today going around in an electric wheelchair. Have I broken a leg? Why, no. I'm just testing out the equipment I'm going to use for my final project/dissertation. I am doing a multimodal human machine interface using computer vision and EMG signals to control the electric wheelchair. Today, I just used the old school joystick to move it around. Also, I was more or less helping the phd student gather data, he is also using the electric wheelchair.
I always thought that electric wheelchairs would be clunky and slow. But apparently, they are pretty sensitive and responsive to the joystick. It was kinda fun going around in it. I bet it wouldn't be fun if I needed it though. So I felt bad for having fun. haha :/
That sounds interesting, I remember reading some articles about the use of EMG, but that was when I was in second semester, and I was more focused in the neurological aspect :P (I had neuroanatomy and that course was though).
ReplyDeleteI want to try a wheelchair too!!!
ReplyDeletesounds interesting, and useful! And well, at least it is good to know that mobility is still viable for those that need to use one.
ReplyDeleteThat's cool! the school supplies you with wheelchairs?
ReplyDeleteThe school does own two wheelchairs that we can do experiments with :)
ReplyDeleteand luis, that sounds like an interesting class! i think your major is pretty awesome by the way, im amazed by the brain hahah
